Diraker you should read the foundation novels by Isaac Asimov. In the 2nd book of the series (Foundation) they talk about science as a religion. I am in the middle of it right now and its really interesting how he took nuclear power and the science behind it and made it a religion.

The Church of Atom reminds me of Beneath the Planet of the Apes, or whatever the second movie was called.

I dont think I ever really watched the original movies. Just the remake. I know I saw them as a kid but none of it registered with me.

My only childhood memory of Planet of the Apes was the ending parody on Spaceballs.

I just finished the 4th book (technically its the 5th book but I accidently skipped Forward the Foundation which is the 2nd book in the series) of this series and holy crap is it really good. Probably the best science fiction books I have read (I am going to start on the robot series next). I really suggest picking up the series if you enjoy Asimov or any science fiction.

Its actually kind of funny how you can notice that Asimov is writing these books during the 50s/60s (atleast the ones i have read so far)

Another great sci-fi book you guys should check out is called Behold the Man, by Michael Moorcock. It's only 150 pages, so it's more of a novelette, but it's awesome. It's about a guy who's infatuated with Christianity and gets an opportunity to travel back in time to see who the real Jesus was.

The Dune book and the Foundation series were some of my favourite reads...

Yeah, the Foundations series is awesome. To think it all started as nothing more than a series of short stories for a small sci-fi magazine so long ago is amazing.

I just looked through my book collection (a cardboard box in my closet lol), and sadly it looks like I'm missing the 3rd book. :(

I'm gonna have to head out and buy a new one, heck I might see if theres a box set and get that since all my copies are about 20 years old and the paper is starting to fade from age (cheap newsprint soft covers). This thread made me want to read through em all again heh, thanks for that.

i could not find a box set of the foundation series.

Here is a list of all the books in order for those wondering

Prelude to Foundation
Forward Foundation
Foundation
Foundation and Empire
Second Foundation
Foundation's Edge
Foundation and Earth

all extremely good books.

I got Robot Visions, Caves of Steel, Robots of Dawn, and a couple other Asimov books for my birthday/christmas so I am starting on those next.

with muttonchops (http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l21/brownfox59/453px-Isaac_asimov.jpg) that epic, he pretty much had to be a science fiction writer or a truck driver.
