ScienceDaily (Jan. 16, 2009) — The next time a loved one brandishes a virtual shotgun in their favorite video game, take heart. That look of glee, says a new study, likely stems from the healthy pleasure of mastering a challenge rather than from a disturbing craving for carnage.
More of a pop pyschology thing but still interesting and relevant to these forums.
Then how do you explain why the gf gets so much joy when she uppercuts the groin in wii boxing?

Kinda makes sense if you think about recent trends in gaming art style. TF2 and WoW are two iconic examples. Also look at the art direction of the next Star Wars MMO.

Gaming art style is mostly due to trying to achieve a unique taste(okami being a fantastic example of this) and maximize performance but not make things look like ass(WoW and WAR being good examples).

this is exactly right. typically the more realistic a game tries to look the worse its performance will be. If you want realism play a game on ps3 if you want something that looks cool but is easy to run you need somthing a bit more comicy

I love the TF2 graphics but hate the WoW style.
Also I like Fallout 3:

So I might be crazy.

Personally when taking a break from a MMO, I miss the people I chat with in vent or TS more than the game, as for the game I prefer to be doing something constructive with those that I game with. Personally I cant stand farming, pop a few guildmates into it and I'll keep farming till they quit long as its a group activity and they stay active.

I enjoy cutting off the heads, slicing the limbs shooting people in the face etc. I like doing it in games too.
