I was thinking the other day, there really isnt a modern Carl Sagan, the closest i could think of as far as popularizers of science is Neil deGrasse Tyson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neil_deGrasse_Tyson). It's a shame really, that scientists tend not to be the sort of people that are good at communicating with the rest of the general population, when they are the people that have the most information about how things should work, and politicians and musicians/celebrities are the people most likely to influence the minds of the public but have the least information about how the world works.

There is a ton of good science out there in the media. The problem is that there's also a ton of bad science out there too. Bad science from things like psuedoscience, conspiracy theories, hoaxes, sloppy journalism, sensationalistic reporting, and deliberate propaganda for political reasons. I think part of the problem is that in american culture, intelligence and intellectuallism isn't valued, and in many cases intellectualism is scorned.

I think your point is still true. In Carl Sagan's day his fellow scientists didn't like how he was a popularizer. As if it wasn't worthy of scientists to do such things. Carl Sagan (and others) opened the door and it's unfortunate that more scientists don't step through it.

I like Neil DeGrasse Tyson too and he's talked about this very issue many times.
