One/both of you work in a wireless related field right? Gnioss and I have some questions!

I probably can't help ya with that, Cinn. I am an electrical engineer doing power distribution design mostly. My main client is Verizon, though. What do you have questions about?

basic radio questions. When an antenna says it has a certain dbi what does that mean?

Yeah, i'm going to set up a NIC with a higher power antenna than the retail one and just need to know what I need to know. I know about wireless networking but not about antennas themselves and such.

aka he wants to steal wireless more effectively.

Must be wanting to start a "who's antenna is bigger" contest.

Hey, but Cinnabar's not fully grown, yet. So, it's not a fair competition!

maybe a webpage on short wave radio operators might be helpful for information or those model airplane clubs.

Most antennas have some signal gain and that is the 7dbi that you see. For every 3 dbi, the signal is twice as strong. When you are engineering an antenna system, you take the gain from your antennas and in line amplifiers, subtract the loss from the cables, connectors and splitters, and then you get the relative system gain (or loss). This lets you know how strong both your transmit and receive signals will be for the entire antenna system.

Hope that helps.

so you take widgets and gadgets, plug um in to the watchamacallit and the dohicky and hope it all works...

gotcha

Thanks Spawl, that does actually help quite a bit.

Now it's time to buy a 14dBi omnidirectional. :smile_ok:
