To be fair, so was Wolfpack Studios.

Things are different now though because there is a lot of 3rd party tools out there for developers to use.

If this game is released on a modern engine with modern combat mechanics I probably will play it for a decade.

I hope they get some funding in and can expand the dev team and also have a customer service team once the game releases. There's no way a few guys can handle it all.

We don't have enough class or archetype information to go on.

We don't have enough class or archetype information to go on.

I know... but if SB is the measuring stick, we can at least determine what we think will be good toons from a fresh server.

Cinnabar
01-02-2012, 09:07 PM
It's really hard to do so without skill lists at least.

6 warriors/barbs, 1 mage bard, 2 pure healers, and a chanter for stamina/mana drains/regen(they also increase grouped caster damage which would be awesome if that includes heals). That's my totally uneducated attempt. ;)

Mourne
01-03-2012, 04:00 AM
A centaur holy group was always a good fresh server starter spec. No one has the ability to roll the proper holy resist jewelry to counter it, and having a dedicated holy resist buff bot so early on is rare. The AoE holy damage would destroy people. 2 sents, 1 priest, 2 bard, 4 prelates, 1 sader.

It would only remain op as long as it would take people to get high ranked vendors. Then it would turn into just a mediocre spec.

But, like Cinn said, I'm just basing this off of SB, and have no idea how the classes and powers etc. will work in FT.

PS Also, the coordinated healing output is insane. Hence only having 1 priest. The prelates and sader can also single target and group heal, not to mention the saders heal can go through mantle.

Cinnabar
01-03-2012, 10:20 AM
Good thoughts Mourne...but the only class that you mentioned that is actually in FT is the bard. ;)

Cinnabar
01-03-2012, 10:33 AM
I think assassins will have their place again as it seems that shadowmantle will be making a reappearance.

A key component of their arsenal is the ability to neutralize a majority of enemy healing, granting them a deadly presence no matter how many seek to aid their target.

Diraker
01-03-2012, 11:36 AM
I found assassins to be a pain in the ass the start on a new server because SM is/was a level 40 skill and took a lot of gold to rank up. Also, remember having to fight over sub par NPC trainers out in the world?

Anyway I'm going aracoix staff warrior!!

Oh we're going to nickle and dime you guys!

To be serious, this has actually been a topic we have been internally talking about. Money is a big issue with development and while we're currently privately funded, it's not likely to last throughout the entire development stage, especially as we are looking to add more members to the development team. There are options we've been exploring, but most of them include having to give up on certain things we don't want to (basically reshaping the game to be more marketable).

Now I'm not saying this is set in stone, but we're thinking about potentially opening the servers to be semi-public from early alpha all the way until release. This would start off including a working combat system, most of the world, and some other things. There's no doubt it would still be bare bones. No serious competitive play could exist (sieges and what not) for some time. The idea would be to let people play all through the development phase and encourage community support.

We would likely handle it by having a few open previews that anyone could attend. Afterwards, we would allow any interested users to do an early pre-order, which would act to purchase a game account, and these users would be able to continually log on and play as we develop the game. Pre-ordering would be cheaper than purchasing a game/lifetime premium account later, so an early investment would pay off for those interested. The real reason to pre-order would be to support the creation of the game that focuses on war based GvG with few restrictions. This is a bit different than the typical "pre-order and play beta" and is an extremely open stance to development, and surely has issues, but it does also seem like an interesting approach to us.

I'm not going to make an official announcement, as we're not sure we want to do this; however, any input on the topic is greatly appreciated.

http://fallenthrones.com/forums/showthread.php?301-Purchasing-Beta-Accounts-from-the-Devs

I think this is a great concept for those who want to get in and pick apart the game early on and contribute something to the development. On the other hand, I worry that it could backfire a bit by having potential players(likely the more casual type that are needed to ensure the game's longevity) log in and think "wtf is this undeveloped pos?" only to never return when the game releases.

Mourne
01-17-2012, 07:10 PM
I love that idea, and have been wishing that more companies would just be honest about needing money. The "pay for beta" thing is fine as long as they're not trying to pull a fast one and they're just up front about things imo.

...I worry that it could backfire a bit by having potential players(likely the more casual type that are needed to ensure the game's longevity) log in and think "wtf is this undeveloped pos?" only to never return when the game releases.

I worry about that too. The only thing I can think of they could do to avoid it would be to only allow people who preorder have access to playing the game, however, then there's the problem of taking peoples' money before they get to try it out, which also sucks.

Nadric

There's no way I'd ever pay to play something that will likely never be released. The fact that they're even considering it shouts vaporware.
