I've seen this mentioned a couple times while browsing the Darkfall boards. Apparently the combat system in this is supposed to be similar to what Darkfall is going to have. If this is true, it might be a good practice tool for us.
Has anyone played this, or even heard anything about it? I may download this tonight, but I've no idea when I'll be able to actually find time to play it.
Here's the link: http://www.taleworlds.com/index.html
You can download the game there for free, but you will have a level restriction (6) unltil you buy a serial for the game. I don't know if there's a monthly fee or not, I missed any mention of one on the site.
I downloaded this and gave it a try. Its a more simplistic combat system currently but I found myself really liking it. Add in the horse combat and it was pretty fun. Got to level 6 though so I need to cough up like 11 bucks to unlock it if I want to progress in it. Pretty good game for a husband wife team.

Yeah, I also tried the demo until level 6. It was pretty interesting. I liked the different target areas and the headshot damage especially. The ability to attack from different angles, and react to those appropriately was pretty cool. I learned a lot about their system just from the gladiator training. I wish I would have been a bit more involved in the horse combat before my trial ended, but it was pretty fun for a few hours.
This is just a one time fee, not monthly
horse combat is kind of cool really. Its awesome on plains but you get worked by archers on hills. I cant quite get the hang of the lance, but a two hander on horseback = pwn.
The landscape really plays into the tactics in the encounters outside of the area spawl. Shields catch arrows in them and break off in combat if you block too much damage with it.
If Darkfall has something akin to this I think its going to be pretty cool. It puts skill and tactics back into pvp. Not just character builds.
Im buying it. Costs 15(CAD) bucks total and if nothing else it will help fund innovation in the mmo genre. They do some really interesting things with this games combat styles.

Yea running at full speed on a horse and smashing someone with a 2h weapon or polearm is awesome. I need to figure out how to capture people alive though, I bet you can make a ton of cash selling them to the slave trader.
kill them with blunt weapons
I can never get the hang of archery while moving. I hate archers on my horse because I scored a nice balanced blade of war and it pwns. I one hit alot of people coming at me down slopes. Once hit for like 90dmg
For the size of the game tho its amazingly fun. Hope DF combat is similiar would be awesome.
Have to say tho... I find it pretty funny that two turks making a completly unprofessional hobby-esque game that trumps just about any other RPG combat system out there.
And its decently balance to. I mean archers own non shield guys (horseback or not). Lances own other horse men (extra reach). Two handed horse dudes own foot soldiers
Ya, only wish it was multiplayer too :(
BTW, Mount and Blade combat is supposed to be similiar to Darkfalls so for those that are curious, you can check it out.
Teth told me on IRC for those that care for the source.
Who is Teth?
And the download is only like 35 MB so nothing major to download either. Game is obviously still in the works but combat is pretty sweet
Teth is a mod on the DF forums, Claus (the person that said it) is a dev.

Wow...this game is incredibly fun.
Surpisingly so eh? I mean it does get repetative later on since its still in progress of being built, but the combat physics are all in place. Essentially they have the game engine up and running and just need to craft the world around it. But yea a nice change of pace, especially the horse combat.

Anyone know how to couch a lance?
Have to stay on a horse and charge a guy at full speed, the lance should lower.
Yea, you dont attack with it. What you do is get up to speed on your horse so your guy drops his lance. Then you have to kind of aim the tip at the guy you are trying to hit. Its quite realistic. If your tip misses in 3D it misses doing damage. Ive been able to pull off about a 150 dmg hit with couched and a good horse. I can get about 80-100 with a two handed sword though and its got a faster swing and bigger sweet spot so I prefer it.
Just wish you could swap out weapons while on horseback, but I guess they are trying to get realism to kick in.
Also sucks that you cant reload crossbows on horseback. One shot and you have to dismount.

Ahh, I was actually hitting the attack button. Makes sense now (and makes lances useful).
I'm able to switch from melee to ranged on horseback.

How much dark plate you go so far? only found 1 spirited charger (well since I could afford it)

I just started a new guy actually, had to rework the stats. I have a Spirited Charger already, but I'm still wearing some really crappy mail. I decided to go heavy on leadership, tactics, and training with this one so we'll see how much that helps my army.
tactics help early on, but not so much when you have 50 knights running around. Slave chiefs are uber though.

slave chiefs?
yea if you get some man hunters and level them up their top end is a slave chief rather than a knight.
knights are lvl 25 i think and slavers are lvl 27. The slaver chiefs use blunt 2 handers on horse back so when you do those noble missions and you dont get to the guy in time the chances are they knock him out and dont kill him (happens too much).
As well the watchmen you can hire from that first neutral town turn into mercenarys which are lvl 25 footman with 2handed swords. Not great due to the fact Im all about the horses for the speed.

I fill my army with half sharpshooters and half knights. The crouched lance charge is wicked; nothing beats running through a group and killing three men at a time. Also makes taking down Black Knights so much easier. My army of 30 just took down an army of 50 Black Knights and Hunters
Yea but only 25 get fielded at a time.

This game's combat system is REALLY fun.
I enjoy being on horseback with a great axe. I charge and kill 2-4 enemies then turn around and charge through them again killing a few more.
I use a big polehammer for blunt damage.
As far as strategy goes, I pretty much order my guys to 'hold' at the top of a hill while I kill a bunch of enemies below. After I kill a bunch I order my guys to 'charge'.

I started this up last night again... it's really not a good idea to use a bow when not on horseback :(

Sorry Gnioss, they don't allow people with mutton chops to play!

Actually I can run just fine but when I quit I need to restart my PC otherwise I'll lock up if I try to do anything, like open up IE or play another game or try and open ventrilo.
And drek I have a character that has lots of athletics and uses a light wieght chest piece. I can run very fast and I use a bow until I run out of arrows, then I switch to a poleaxe (reach 170 or so). On foot.
BUt like I said, the most fun is using a 2h weapon on horse back (ok ok I guess a lance is fun too but only if the terrain is flat enough).

If anyone bought the full version of this I will give you my soul for the key. Each key can activate 2 games!
What are you going to give me for it huh?

my first born child, as well as my undying admiration.
This game is way too much fun. Actually swinging a sword yourself instead of the computer doing it kicks ass.
Hot lovin' to who ever gives me a key to it!

muwhaha I already stole muttman's key!
Yea its oddly satisfying to charge up and smoke someone with a big 2 hander from horseback. Hell its repeatative as shit due to the game being not very large but its mucho fun. I think my guy was almost 30 before it started to lose the edge.
I like the array of weapons and the way the game moves. Not sure how well it would work in a MMO environment due to lag factors, etc. but its interesting none the lass.

The game was fun for me up until I figured out I could pwn 50 guys solo if i got a horse and rode in slow circles around them.
The AI sucks.
