For those that don't know...

You begin as one of many civilizations (German, Roman, Greek, Inca, etc.) with a settler unit and an explorer. You plant a city, and begin developing your civilization. You climb a technology ladder while expanding your civilization by planting new cities, or taking someone else's. There's trading, research, cultural influence, military battles, war, peace...just about everything that a civilization does. You can win depending on the settings you choose at the beginning of the game...by blowing up everyone else's shit, making a space shuttle, diplomatic wins, or cultural influence. Primarily you win by being agressive and expansionistic, which you do through war.

It's a RTS game, and can be played multiplayer. Civ 1,2 were a lot of fun imo, the third was a bust. The newest, Civ IV is a blast.

Gamespot gave it like a 9.5 out of 10. Seems like you agree. I guess I'll have to go pick it up this afternoon.

So have they improved the basic CIV model even further? I mean what is there to do that is new and different than past games, or is it just improved everything.

Maj
11-02-2005, 02:47 PM
Yeah good point Mutt, all these Civ type games are getting kinda old without adding any new significant features just upping the graphics which most of the times causes limits in the gameplay.

Konrad
11-02-2005, 03:50 PM
They added quite a bit actually. The model is the same, but with a bunch of new features. I'm even more addicted than I was with the previous ones. I just wish they would have kept the Viking civilization.

Armind
11-02-2005, 04:34 PM
Agreed Konrad.

It's still the same basic model, but everything's been improved. There's more ways of winning, more units, more to micromanage. I felt that in the older civs, some of the managing was a nightmare. This version seems a lot more user friendly. Of course, Sid came back to work on this one, so Im not surprised it plays so well.

Maj, I know what you mean about annoying vids and extras that slow the game. In civ 3, there were all kinds of stupid and annoying videos, there is none of that anymore. They've cut out all that crap, and streamlined the game, so turns happen more quickly. Even the multiplayer can be played with simultaneous turns.

It is the same Civ feel, it's a good one, and it's even more fun to play against people. This is another game with player accountabality, and one where you can make your opponent beg for mercy. IT's a blast.

Mutt

Hrmm, I like the simulataneous turns multiplay. Can you set a time limit per turn sequance or do you have to wait for everyone to click ready.

either one. imo, timed is best.

Yea, that way you dont sit there waiting for the guy that went to go get a sandwich (Numb)

Do you think its worth grabbing and getting a few TSP guys in and trying to conquer each other?

Armind
11-02-2005, 06:22 PM
I think it's worth playing. It's very addictive. It's always more fun playing with/against people, especially if there were some TSP playing it.

This is a chance for someone like Numb to be a princess, Queen Numb of the British.

Mutt
11-02-2005, 06:25 PM
I pictured Numb more as a Queen of the Zulu

Armind
11-02-2005, 06:26 PM
I thought that was Scin? Or is that Princess of the Zulus...?

Mutt
11-02-2005, 06:30 PM
I think Scin is more the kind of princess that gets passed around alot than being with any one nation

I'm definitely down for some Civ4 multiplayer, shoot me a message whenever you want to set up a game. All the multiplayer games I've played so far have lasted 2-4 hours, so we'll definitely need to plan ahead.

Been playing this and Age of Empires 3 a lot. I haven't tried the multiplayer in Civ yet because I assumed it would take too long but it might be worth a try.

And yes the game is good, I owned Civ 3 and all the expansions but this one feels a lot more streamlined. You can do almost everything from the main map without going into different menus and whatnot.

Sema, I dont think so, but I dont know for sure.

Ternach, I think you can, there's lots of Germans playing the game, I don't see why you couldn't...unless you can't play it in your hamlet maybe?

Is 11 CST a good time for everyone tonight?

Kydorias

So who won?

Armind
11-04-2005, 11:29 AM
We didn't get to finish. Konrad crashed, then everytime he connected something else went wrong, so we just canceled the game after an hour of play. Though technically Donar had the highest score. I'm not sure why they list the scores as the game's going on, it's kind of a cheap glimpse into how your opponents are doing.

The thing about CIV is, your starting point is critical to the entire game. Starting off in a bad spot (the desert, jungle, or mts) is going to be a hindrance throughout the game. No two games are the same.

Kydorias
11-04-2005, 01:26 PM
That's the same as in all the Civ games. I'd restart game after game in Civ III until I had a decent starting location.

Works for a while, well above recommendations myself, and it really bogs down in long games (against CPU opponents)

Konrad
11-04-2005, 04:49 PM
Yeah, I bog down pretty bad in the late game as well. I had the same problem with Civ3 on this computer as well, and I'm way above the system recommendations.

My net crashed Armin, who won?

Armind
11-04-2005, 10:30 PM
It was just me and Donar. He came up to my border with a warrior, and scouted my entire perimeter. I think he was surprised to see it was as big as it was. Anyway, then he said he sent a stack of horse archers to attack me, I lol'd and told him horse archers were for taking out catapults, and I had spearman, swordsman, axeman, and archers anyway, 3/4 of which were above the tech of horse archers. Before I ever saw his units he said that my towns disappeared on his screen, and my border was no longer there. He said he was bugged, and he quit out.

Sounds like a lot of you are playing. I still haven't tried multiplayer but I'll be around for some games tomorrow if anyone wants to play.

Armind
11-10-2005, 03:59 PM
I suggest you play the tutorial, read the manual, and plan to address different areas of the game every time you play. For instance, first decide your build order and when you're going to expand. Next game aim for specific techs, many times the first person to discover certain techs gets important bonuses. The following game try to learn the best way to generate commerce, it effects your civ's income and how quickly you can research new techs. Then make sure you learn and begin to identify what resources are important, why and when you need them. Learn the different units strengths and weaknessess, their is a great deal of rock/paper/scissors with military units, and don't forget their combat attributes which you can chose.
