One of the things that got me interested in Dark and Light is the fact that there will be a single world instead of multiple servers, so you don't have the problems that many other games experience where servers become dead while others thrive. Dark and Light will be using a cluster of servers to run this single, immense, world.
A couple of pics comparing the size of Ganareth (DnL world) to other games was posted recently on the DnL forums. Just take a look at the links, Ganareth is friggin' HUGE!

In the second picture, the red area is WoW, the white area is SoG (the free prelude to DnL thats due out Dec 8th) and the total area is DnL.
I got some weird invite from them in my mail. Think its mostly trying to get me to preorder though.

Yeah, its the annoucement for the release of SoG on December 8th and the option to preorder DnL. They also sent out e-mail regarding reserving your name in SoG/DnL.
"Pioneer" DnL preorders start November 24th and run thru December 4th. If you do the Pioneer preorder you get special features in DnL like a pet dragon which you can ride or have fight for you and you can transfer gold from your SoG character to DnL.
Regular preordering starts after Dec 4th until release which is supposedly in April 2006 and doesn't include anything special like the Pioneer preorder.

Actually, its not a good vs evil game. Dark doesnt mean evil and Light doesn't mean good. It has something to do with the planet itself I believe (a dark side and a light side) and the two sides are at war with each other.

ok well its alignment based same difference...
Outside of Dark and Light kingdoms, that are forbidden to the opposite alignment, the 10 kingdoms are open to PvP between Dark and Light. Moreover, the attacks on weak characters will be handled by an honor code.
You cannot attack players who have the same alignment as yours, except in friendly fights without any consequences.
You cannot hurt a character the same alignment as yours. Spells with an area of effect can disturb your fellow fighters if they are in the zone, but they will never hurt them.
I dunno... i think theres a point in an MMO where its too much.
I mean, its cool and all that the world is what 56x the size of WoW, but do the servers support 150,000 players on at the same time? Seems like a lot of the world will just feel like Shadowbane.
Only point im trying to make is that with a large world you have a low population density, which can suck.

So is anyone else going to try to get one of the codes to play the "pre-game"?

Its not the hardware that limits games from supporting thousands of users. Its the shitty network architecture these games have.

I plan on trying to get an SoG key, not gonna preorder though.
As far as it being too big a world, well you gotta remember there's only 1 world, so it better be big or it'll end up overpopulated.
Game worlds can span multiple servers, its just a matter of how to coordinate it all.

That's exactly how they're doing it. They'll have a cluster of servers for one world and from what they've said, it'll make lag less of an issue because they can "shift" server usage based on how much activity is occuring in an area. So if there's a war going on with alot of people in a small area, they can transfer more resources to that area to keep things from becoming unplayable.
Sounds good in theory. Probably won't know how effective it'll be until the stress test takes place.
Another plus to having one world, is customer service (GM's/CCR's) will probably be better since you don't have them spread out over multiple worlds. Also won't have the "our server is better then your server" crap either. :p:
Its not the size of your world that matters, its how you use it.
Yeah, I've been hearing some bad things about DnL from people who have beta tested it, for instance the PvP sucks ass, and they have many key features still missing from the game. Basically its reminding them of SB beta in a number of ways.
I've heard this from more than one person, but then again, I can't say that I really knew any of them, most were from the DF community. So don't take my word for it (or their's necessarily).

good network architecture and you can run a game on minimal hardware...

I'll withhold judgement til the games' closer to release. Hard to really get an accurate idea how it's going to turn out when its still in early closed beta.
Though this is one reason why I won't be doing the Pioneer pre-order. With DnL not due out for another 5-6 months minimum and having very limited factual information about the game, I just don't know yet if I'll be buying it at release.

Aye, hopefully they're creating a smooth-functioning system.

My god that game world is HUGE......... if it is infact 56x the size of wow the actual game content would have to be immense to accomodate that.
or it could be vast plains of nothingness.
Size without anything worth looking at is useless.
Its like SB in beta, remember how empty and useless the world felt?
