Gamespy just did a multi-day preview (http://archive.gamespy.com/landing/huxley/) of this upcoming MMOFPS. After reading it, I think it might be a fit for at least a transition game for us (if it delivers, it's a game that will be more than just transition for me). While it's combat is FPS, it also is very much an RPG. PvP is a central focus of the game, with PvE questing elements. They also plan on having some pretty cool guild support:

And strange as it may sound, Huxley Studio is planning to allow individual clans control highly-contested, albeit smaller, Battle Zones. "If a clan wins over a specific territory through battle (maybe a Lunarite mine on a small island), they can accumulate wealth [with which] to buy vehicles and awesome housing for its members," Kang assured us. We're not sure where these areas would fit in context of the game's larger structure, but it sure seems like a great incentive for player-made organizations to get, um, organized.

It's supposed to come out this summer, and has been seen and played by many outside of the developer, making it the antithesis of Darkfall. Make sure to check out the videos, they are tits.

I never played Planetside even though the idea sounded promising. Was it any fun to play?

It was fun, but they certainly had a problem with stability and longetivity. There wasn't really a point to the combat, and the leveling/specialization was fairly weak. We'll see what this game can do to overcome those problems

It was a blast but it got boring quickly. I played it by myself when it released and can imagine that it'd be a ton more fun with mutliple squads of guildies that are in vent and communicating, hitting multiple targets at the same time.

There's no guarantee we'll be 1337 at this type!

Theres no guarantee we will be l33t at anything. Infact if we go in thinking we are going to be l33t than we will likely not be. Being TSP is as much about humble and understanding that it takes time and discipline to be good rather as much as it is about having a reputation for being good pvpers.

Planetside was a pretty awesome game when the stability issues were brought under control. That said they failed to deliver on many different areas.

No guild controlled bases was a big one.

Bases in general were far to small for an FPS, and death was pretty pointless like in WoW. That said it was really amazing the things you could do with that game w/ large groups of organized people or small organized groups. Nothing like 30 Bombers carpet bombing a base.

sign i thought it was going to be something cool like PS in which you could really do a lot but sounds like its just BG, WoW junk.....

I played the planetside beta, it was amusing for like 45 mins. Coolest thing was doing a drop on some base from a troop transport ship. Sexy.

Omg yes....jumping out and assaulting a tower was awesome. I liked that a vehicle could be loaded in the transport also.

Old school was running out shooting all 3 homing rockets in the air and then locking onto some sorry ass reaver. RAIN OF DOOM!! Those were the days!
