View Full Version : The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
http://www.elderscrolls.com/games/oblivion_overview.htm
Ships on March 20th. I was a big fan of Morrowind so I am really looking forward to this.
The trailers for it are awesome, with real world errosion, they say you can physically lost in it.

I want to pick up a copy as well, but I'm having a lot of trouble finding reviews on the game. So far, all I've seen is something posted on their website saying some magazine gave them a 9.5 out of 10.

Be rough getting a "real" review of the game for another week at least.

After about 8 hours of play-time spread out over two nights I figured I would share my fun filled joy-joy feelings over this game.
The graphics are really, really nice. I'm thinking about buying a 9800 this weekend just to see how much better it actually is.
The game plays fairly well. As with most new games, I decided to use the preset control configuration and see how smoothly it ran. The keys are clustered together nicely...but I think Shadowbane made me lazy because I hate having to use the keyboard AND the mouse to move.
The world interaction is fairly simple...though it is definately one of those games that yields unexpected rewards to the player who walks around slowly and inspects everything.
I'm enjoying it alot. I actually made a thief (for some unknown reason). Hopefully, the game will be fun playing a 2nd time through with a different race/class combo.

Apparently there is no piracy protection on this game at all. A buddy of mine is making about 12 copies on DVD right now. GG developers.

I picked up my copy last night. Played for a bout 2 hours and I don't think I even left the dungeon =p Game starts in prison (like Morrowind did). The character creation is awesome...I spent almost an hour alone just making my guy exactly how I wanted. I ended up going Wood Elf Thief/Marksman.
Souisha is right about rewarding the slow, curious player. Like I said, I havent even left the dungeon yet and I already found an amazing underground Goblin lair.
Awesome game so far. The only complaint I have is the UI. No matter how high of a resolution you go, the UI doesn't compensate by getting smaller. That part is noticeably geared towards the console gamer.

My only complaint is that the mouse sensitivity slider does exactly nothing lawl. with my G5 set on 1000 dpi resolution it's too unresponsive, with the G5 at 2000dpi its too responsive.
The game, my gawd, I got settings maxed on my 7800gt @ 1280x1024 and it looks amazing, framerates are totally acceptable at these settings. It's a dirty memory whore though.

seriously, no joke. Which torrent are you using?

One from torrentspy the Reloaded version, haven't had any problems with their previous releases not sure why this one is being so lame!
I downloaded mine over night, but it was also from a private torrent group. Might want to try thepiratebay.org
Pirates bay has the reloaded one, although its not overly fast itself. Is in the 10-15kb/s range.

I'm having the same problem (Theif/ Marksman). Once you get LA to Expert, you lose the encumbrance of any LA you are wearing.
It helps a little, but I'm thinking I might sink a few points into STR for shits and giggles.

This game is the perfect remedy for a bum ankle. I've leveled two characters to 10, and spent countless hours just walking around the countryside, and I haven't even touched the main quest yet. Btw, the Dark Brotherhood quests is the apex of single player gaming. I can't express how much I love this game.

Try the market district. If you're talking about stuff you've stolen, you have to find a fencer from the Thieve's Guild.

I just snuck around deer hunting in the mountains the other day.

I got it a few days ago and it definitely gets the seal of approval. In my opinion it fixes most if not all of the problems Morrowind had (semi-retarded combat, generic quests, etc).
Check it out if you haven't already.
:smile_ok:
Is that Jean Luc Picards voice for the emperor?
I got to Chorrol and you can sell there.
You need to find merchants that deal in the goods you want to sell.

Yes, the voice of Patrick Stewart is somewhat unmistakable heh.
Sounds like there are having some major issues with their game right now, uncluding major bugs on the xbox 360 version (have fun patching that).

Is a good article with some tips on how to optimize it (seeing as how the ingame options suck)

Been playing this a bit but so far it's pretty awesome, especially the dark brotherhood quests, especially enjoyed the sneaking back into the prison to wax that bastard that is talkin shit when you first start the game. You get tons of awesome rewards to.
Haven't had any encumberence problems on my assassin although I don't pick up everything doing all the quests and doing a bit of haggling has me at a little over 3k gold at level 3.
Haven't played with the magic in the game much but the illusion school has been extremely helpful with invis spells, see in the dark spells(<3 those for the DB stuff) and the alteration school has some lock opening skills to save some time and lock picks... I suck at picking locks :(.
I've killed 280 people and I have 0 murders! bwahaha, pro assassination skills.

I just got the game today from a friend but I doubt I will have anytime to play with some seriours RL commitments going on right now as some have noticed due to my lack of attendance in DDO.
Its rough on my system, thats for sure. The outdoor areas crank my fps down to 20-22.
Anything without alot of trees and what not seems to be alright, and sits around 35-40fps
This is at minimal res and textures.
I had it at higher rates, but it kept crashing.
The game is very buggy, and is inline for a patch, as well as driver revisions from ATI and nVidia.

Drekor, I have a small suggestion for you. If you already haven't, do the main quest through Kvatch before you level too much higher. At higher levels it becomes almost impossible to close the gate. Theres a big complaint on the boards about it.
The last thing you want is someone telling you how to play your game, especially one as open-ended and non-linear as Oblivion, so please disregard if you want. It's just that, from what I've read, lots of people have been forced to restart because it's near impossible when a character passes a certain point/level.
technically you can run through the whole game as level one and the word is, its actually easier in the long run if you do so.

I just started the main quest and I'm at level 18, and have had no problems with it being too hard. Don't get me wrong, it's hard, but nothing I can't handle. I could see it being more of a problem for a stealth character though.
can't wait till school is over! i am holding back on installing the dam game so i would not get addicted to it
And now we already have the first oblivion nude mod: http://www.igniq.com/2006/04/oblivion-nude-mod-already-available.html
Think this game is going to get the backlash GTA got?
Syrak

Wasn't the backlash GTA got because the programmers put the nudity in the game not just some goofy modders?
Turbine did the same thing here. The nude textures are all there, just covered by clothes.

Hrmmm I finished it a few days ago if your talking about the big gate where you got the time limit it's not really a problem, I finished it in about 5 minutes and I doubt being higher level would do anything, I one shot nearly everything because of being a master at sneak and using a good bow :) and if they don't die half the time they still have no idea where I am so I just shoot them again and kill them.
Had a lot of trouble in the arena though, pretty much has to switch to my sword since I kept pumping up other stats then my speed... been doing a new game with putting 5 stats in speed every level, makes it soooooooo much easier to be an arcer :smile_ok:
