Apparently, Paul Van Dyk has posted about 90% of his new album on Myspace (six million plays so far). It is insanity incarnate. So for those of you who dig the madness:
http://www.myspace.com/paulvandyk
New album releases on Aug 14th, where he will be playing at the Virgin Megastore in Union Square. That is followed by the 2 sold out shows in Central Park that weekend.
If you live in NY...I am beyond jealous.

I wasn't aware we had people with an interest in electronic music in the guild. What other djs do you like? I'm an oakenfold fan, and I like DJ Doboy sets a lot. I've only listened for 5 years or so casually, but I like it.

I think I might be the only one...other than Cinn who I am unsure of as far as the level of interest. Although, that was how I slowly got to the point of joining TSP in the first place. We used to sit in IRC and talk about tuna on salad and banging electronica all effin day when I lived in Hollywood.
I am what is refered to as a reformed "euro snob". I spent about 10 years listening only to progressive house out of europe...so I tend to enjoy the "old school heads" like Seb Fontaine, Jeremy Healy, Danny Rampling, Judge Jules, Blue Ellis, Nick Warren (one half of Way Out West with Oakenfold), Sasha, Digweed, Pete Tong, Carl Cox, Robert Miles, and Dave Seaman. Hell...I remember when Fatboy Slim used to team with Tall Paul.
Then I became a total trance snob and got hooked on PvD, Tiesto, Portishead, and Hybrid.
By that time I was managing Sandra Collins, Deepsky, Electric Skychurch, John Kelly, Chris Fortier, Kimball Collins, Jimmy Van Malleghem, Noel Sanger, Soul Oddity, Apex Twin, and a bunch of other people you probably never heard of...so I had to start getting a clue as to what else was out there.
Now I dig on a nice blend of the bangin euro stuff as well as slammin stateside guys like DJ Dan, Josh Wink, Hyper, Eric Davenport, Keoki (when he isn't shooting dope), Green Velvet, George Acosta, and Boris.
The only thing I don't dig on now is "gay house" (i.e. Junior Vazquez, Eric Morrillo). I even listen to breaks...but it ain't my bag.
- Favorite Electronic Single - "Nightmare" - Brainbug
- Favorite ElectronicAlbum - "Politics of Dancing (disk 2)" - Paul Van Dyk
- Favorite Electronic Set - Paul Oakenfold @ Creamfields in '99
- Favorite Electronic Live show - Paul Van Dyk @ the Roxy in '04
I got lucky and ran Nightclubs (Twilo, Remote Lounge, Gruv, The Edge, Groove Jet), produced live events (Transatlantic Move, Love Parade, WMC), syndicate radio shows (Essential Mix on 1FM), and got to see DJ's wreck shop across the globe.
Now I am just a homebody with a wealth of rare music and great stories. But I wouldn't trade that decade of being the man for any ammount of money.
If anyone could ever teach me how to transfer stuff from DAT and host it online somewhere, I have about 6,300 hours of live stuff sitting in boxes in my closet. As it is, my itunes lists my stored hard drive electronica as 83 days of music.
BTW...if you don't have one...I STRONGLY reccommend getting a SIRIUS satelite radio, set it to Area 33, and rip the knob off.
is that overkill?

I am going to see the Scorpions at the Beacon in NYC sept 26. I think this will be the 7th time I see them live. Freakin' Scorpions have been playing 35 years now. Their first album came out in 1971.
I skipped over the whole rave party thing. I guess I was still clubbing but not at those type of clubs. Soush, you lived on LI, ever go to Malibu in Lido Beach or Mulcahys in Wantagh or Dublin Pub in New Hyde Park? That was the sort of club I'd hit, although I'd go to more rock type clubs too.

Some people married and settled down...I just roamed and lived strange day after strange day. You would be surprised the things that come to you if you don't chase.

I didn't club when I was in high school and college in New York. I think the closest I came was going to the "rock & roll cathedral" nights at Limelight (which is now Avalon). Back then it was all about Sundance in Bayshore and all the "guido" clubs on Hempstead Tpk. like Zacharys.
My first "rave" was at Simon's in Gainesville when I went to UF in '92. Thats when I started meeting and networking with DJ's and promoters. It just sort of snowballed from there.

The TV thing was random. I was back in NY living in Port Washington when 9-11 happened and I lost some friends and family and it was just a shitty time. I had a friend who moved to L.A. the year before who said I should drive out there and dwell on his couch for a few months to get my shit straight.
I ended up working at Dick Clark as a production assistant for $65 a day and climbed the ladder for about 4 years before I got sick of freelancing and moved back east.
It was fun...but I wouldn't reccommend it as a career choice.

I actually have Sirius radio and 85% of the time it's on Area 33. I also like www.di.fm internet radio as well. I can't believe you managed all those artists, and yes I've heard of a few of them, most notably aphex twin, which everyone should know.
Since I started listening in '01 I've really only heard and liked most trance, candy trance, anthem trance, basically the boxed up trance that all the scene people despise, but hey, I enjoy it.
As far as house I'm not so much a fan, I like my build up and breakdown on the trance level, and house doesnt offer that nearly as much. I've never been to an electronic concert so maybe thats what I'm missing out on.

Thats a pretty good internet station...but if you are a trance head, and looking to expand your threshold for house, you need to go to the mecca:
http://www.ministryofsound.com/ministryofsound/players/radio.aspx
Since you have a SIRIUS you have one of the greatest tools to be introduced to new music. If you hear a song you like, look up the artist on Myspace and see what else they have out there. The other thing to do is check out what an entire label has to offer. Usually, most labels have an "identity" and if one artist strikes your fancy...chances are others will.
A good example is Sander Kleinenberg. He popped up out of nowhere as one of Sasha's side products. He is now all over the place.
Lastly...get out and go catch some live beats. Perhaps even more than musicians, the relationship between DJ and audience is a huge thing. Go cruise YouTube and check some of the live PvD videos from Coachella and Burning Man and Central park. It will insipre you to leave the house and rock out. If you are down in SoCal, I know there are a lot of resident dj's out there who are national headliners that you can catch for cheap (Donald Glaude, DJ Dan, Christopher Lawrence).
As I like to tell the non-believers...house music will change your life!

True...but there are a lot of sites that track the sets:
http://www.siriusbackstage.com/forum/showthread.php?p=756508
More importantly, the guys with the weekly shows (Judge Jules, PvD, Oakenfold, Robbie Rivera, George Acosta) list their sets on their own personal sites.
Also, MixMag and MixMag UK list the weekly set listings from Tong's Essential Mix and Essential Selection.

I went to Tiesto's show last month and have to say it was pretty shitty...which I'm not really a fan of his anyways so it wasn't a big deal. But he walked off at exactly 2:30 even with people chanting his name and yelling for one more song. He didn't do anything spectacular and wasn't into the music at all.
Aside from PvD, I might be going to the ATB show this month and Sasha's in October.

I saw PvD last year in Orlando at Firestone...which is nice but small and provincial. It was an "in between" show on a thursday night between two real shows. He went on at 12:30 and the place shut down at 2:15 and they promptly booted everyone and that was that.
So at this point I'll only go to the Central Park show and the Ultra gig at the WMC in March.
When I saw him at the Roxy he threw down a six hour set, then was forced to come back and play for another half hour at 7:00am because no one would leave.
Now that was a friggin show!

I don't like much of ATB's newest stuff, at least not nearly as much as I did his older work from the '99-00 time period. van Buuren is another long time favorite of mine along with Oakenfold and Armand van Helden. DJ Aphrodite and DJ Dara have to make my top list as well. <3 drum & bass.

Happy hardcore blows and shouldn't even be in the same sentence with drum & bass. Go download my favorite d&b song of all time: DJ Aphrodite - Wishin' on a Star
Isn't hardkiss crew from/in Cali? I don't know of this area being a big breakbeat place.

I can appreciate the skill...it just isn't my thing. I BRIEFLY worked with Aphrodite and a few others (Storm, D-Love) on the '97 DMC tour when they did their dates in Florida, but I just never got into it.
Now I KNOW that I am a "euro snob" when it comes to electronica...but D&B people are ten times worse when it comes to elitisim and segregation in music. Perhaps it is different in your neck of the woods...but here they are like an inbred clan of drifters who stay tight and shun everyone else.
I also blame D&B for that horendous 5 year stretch of ridiculous pants that have legs as wide as my waist.

lol....that was absolutely not d&b. Out of every rave or large party I went to, d&b/jungle had a separate room and you didn't see them in there. Trance is to blame for it as the fast and heavy beats allowed for stomping, which those pants were worn for. I think most d&b beats are too mellow for it.

Don't blame that on trance! The euro trance movement might be responsible for fuzzy hats and doc martins...but definately not oversized Jenco pants!

Not that I know of. The electronica scene isn't that big here. When I went to the Tiesto show, I could look around and tell that 90% of those people wouldn't know any other trance artists if asked.
