MERRY CHRISTMAS. I'm a Christian and I love Jesus Christ my savior. Everyone should read the Bible as there are many wonderful things to learn. We should get some links going.
But since it's CHRISTmas Eve, I'm going to spend time with my family and celebrate the gift of life, love, and goodness.

Reading the bible helped me become an atheist. Yes, everyone should read their bible!
Happy Solstice! (a few days ago)
Jeremiah 10:2 (KJV) Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. 3 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. 4 They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.
Follow God's word heathens!

CNN had a report today about a baby Jesus being stolen from a nativity scene. Happens every year. This year, though, someone replaced the baby... he's a Jew who was not happy about the theft. To prevent it from happening again, they put a GPS device in the statue.
They Lo-Jacked Baby Jesus.
Pimp my Saviour?

This year and last year there were surveillance videos going around of people stealing the baby jesus. I can recall two such videos and in both it was young females doing the stealing. (eta: actually one of the videos was an old woman taking the jesus, she had been doing so every year for many years). eta again: These video were from private property, like on churches and businesses. On a similar note at least two Wiccan pentacle displays on a town halls were vandalized this year. One in NY and another in Wisconsin. One a truck drove up onto the curb and ran it over (eta: this is being investigated as a hate crime). The other was stolen. A few years back two teenage high school girls vandalized a Solstice display on a government building. Also every year a "Freethought" holiday display in a Wisconsin courthouse is vandalized too. Anyway there are all sorts of idiots around. I hope they find lo-jack jesus (if it's taken). That's pretty funny. But they might just track down the baby jesus to the dump or bottom of the lake or something...video is better.

P.S. Christmas as a holiday actually has very little to do with the birth of the person Jesus, Jesus was actually born in the summer or spring. the modern christmas tradition is more associated with the secular holiday of Saturnalia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturnalia) then it is the birth of any deity.
So.
Merry Saturnalia.

I dont like the artisan, I've got a 5qt Professional, cost 250$ CDN, so it should be similarly priced down there in the US of A.
Unless you're going to be running a home-based baking business or somesuch, IMO the big 400watt+ KitchenAid's are a waste of money. Also fuck all the attachments, if you need that kinda shit buy a stand alone version of it. Pasta Roller, juicer, etc, they're all shit compared to even manual versions of their standalone counterparts.

Hey ablate have you ever used a hand-operated meat grinder and if so how bad do they suck.
Also: Do you use a stone and honing rod to sharpen knives or do you use one of those ceramic V-things

For my MAC knives I actually use a Fiskar's RollSharp (as recommended by MAC, they re-brand them and sell them too). I use mine heavily every day and run it through the rollsharp every week or so, it's shaveably sharp still. It's exceedingly foreign to me, using a knife sharpening device, but it's recommended and it works so I'll continue.
For my german steel and the inevitable family/friends "can you sharpen my knives?" I have a shitty dual-grit (100/400), a 1200 grit DMT Diamond Whetstone, and a 4000 grit Japanese Water Stone. I've never used the ceramic v-rod system things, but they probably work, just not practical for weekly sharpening most likely.
Oh and hand crank meat grinders are quite easy and fine, just like hand crank pasta rollers. A lot more control, which is nice.

I got my wife the Kitchen-Aide like Roxie described, with two mixing bowls. It has been a great investment, I get lots of Chocolate Chip Cookies in return.
She likes it and it has never broke.
Anyway more on topic, Christmas is a special time regardless of your beliefs, most people get additional quality time with their families. So to all of you Merry Christmas!
I like to think of it as Christ mas=more in Spanish, Christ More.
Luke 2
The Birth of Jesus
1In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2(This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3And everyone went to his own town to register.
4So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
The Shepherds and the Angels
8And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ[a] the Lord. 12This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."
13Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
14"Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests."
15When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about."
16So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.
Footnotes:
Luke 2:11 Or Messiah. "The Christ" (Greek) and "the Messiah" (Hebrew) both mean "the Anointed One"; also in verse 26.
