The grind is limited by the Meditation system (and DF-ROA gives tons of Meditation points after doing some tutorial tasks). Still, there is a grind.

I play DF-ROA only about 10-15 hours a week, about two weeks now, and I have basic elemental magic (one school), attributes all at 50, all random skills, and most must have spells at 50 (Launch, Begon, etc.). Archery 90, Greatsword 50.

Is my character competitive ? No. My lack of leveled Fire magic, only 1 weak ray, and without compensating with high damage melee/archery, means I can fight, help in a siege, but it is not PvP competitive.

So my guess (PvP ready, no more) would be it takes around
  • a) 3 to 4 weeks casual (15 hours/week)
  • b) 2 weeks more intense grinding
  • c) 1 week hardcore grinding with clan support.

The leveling your skills is infinitely faster than it used to be. Most TSP barely even experienced anything past limited melee skills. It's a different game when you start getting high in all of these magic areas.

Competitive is a funny word in DF. You're under noob protection for 24 played hours which gives you just enough time to be able to participate in a siege.

There are three grinds in DF. The character skill grind, the gear grind, and the player skill grind. The player skill grind is probably what's going to be most challenging. This game takes a very high degree of ability which only comes through practice.
